POPULATION: Corpus Christi has a population of 380,783, according to the 2000
metro census, but the entire seven-county bay area has more than 500,000 people.
WEATHER: Located near the warm waters of the Gulf Coast, the mean temperature is
71 degrees, and it’s not uncommon to have wintertime temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
TRIVIA: A portion of the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor, which starred Ben Affleck, Josh
Hartnett, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Alec Baldwin, was filmed on the USS Lexington.
Before Fred Gipson wrote the novel Old Yeller, he was a journalist for the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times.
HISTORY: Corpus Christi started out as a frontier trading post called Kinney’s
Trading Post or Kinney’s Ranch. It was named after Col. Henry Lawrence Kinney, an adventurer,
colonizer and impresario who founded the settlement in 1838-39.
